About this Item

Saint-Julien 2009
2 (1 x 2) 750ml
The 2009 Left Bank harvest is widely regarded as one of the greatest of the modern era, and for Château Moulin Riche the vintage holds particular historical significance as the first release in which the wine was produced as a fully independent grand vin from its own specific 20-hectare vineyard parcels to the northwest of Saint-Julien, rather than as the second wine of Château Léoville Poyferré. Jancis Robinson MW awarded 16.5/20, finding it thick and dense with confidence and verve, not easy sweet points-scoring, and describing it as complete and serious in character. The wine is produced by the same technical team responsible for Léoville Poyferré, under the direction of Didier Cuvelier, whose family has owned both properties since 1920. Moulin Riche’s name dates to references as early as 1885, believed to refer to an ancient windmill that once stood at the site. The blend is 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Merlot and Petit Verdot, aged in 65% to 75% new French oak.

Provenance

The late David Brice was a respected wine connoisseur, collector and co-founder of Brice and Burnett – The Fine Wine Specialists (formerly Wine Cellar). His lifelong passion for wine from all corners of the world wine, and generosity, helped develop a culture of fine wine in South Africa and beyond. Always with value and authenticity in mind, the collection spans a wide range of styles from leading producers and diverse regions. The wines were professionally imported under refrigeration and carefully stored at Brice and Burnett (formerly Wine Cellar) thereafter. Many of the producers are not available in South Africa and provide an excellent buying opportunity.

David studied and tasted Bordeaux more than any other region and he purchased en-primeur, or pre-release, for more than 3 decades. He bought the great vintages, loved magnums, and enjoyed the sweet wines of Sauternes. The cellar contains the famous names, but also highly regarded but lesser-known Chateaux and appellations.

For more detailed information on the lots, please feel free to contact Roland Peens (roland@winecellar.co.za). Roland spent many years sharing and enjoying these wines with David Brice and is happy to provide further insight into the collection.

Critics Ratings

“Very dark purplish crimson. Thick and dense but with confidence and verve. Not easy sweet points-scoring. Very youthful. Complete. Serious!” - Jancis Robinson MW, JancisRobinson.com, 16.5/20 (Jan 2013)
