About this Item

Saint-Julien 2001
1 (1 x 1) 750ml
The 2001 Left Bank harvest produced wines of classic structure, elegance and cedar-inflected complexity, with Saint-Julien delivering some of the finest expressions of the vintage in the entire Médoc. Château Lagrange’s 2001 earned 17.5/20 from Jancis Robinson MW, who called it absolutely classic claret with nothing out of place, succulent and dry with real breeding, and 92/100 from Neal Martin, who found it the quintessential Saint-Julien wine with blackberry, cedar, cigar box and superb cedar and tobacco-tinged length. Robert Parker awarded 90/100, noting its better integration of new oak than usual and its sweet, elegant, supple-textured finish. Lagrange is one of Saint-Julien’s great comeback stories, classified Third Growth in 1855 and transformed after its acquisition by the Japanese company Suntory in 1983, which invested massively in replanting and modernising the estate under the direction of Marcel Ducasse. The blend is 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 28% Merlot and 7% Petit Verdot from 118 hectares in a single unbroken block.

Provenance

The late David Brice was a respected wine connoisseur, collector and co-founder of Brice and Burnett – The Fine Wine Specialists (formerly Wine Cellar). His lifelong passion for wine from all corners of the world wine, and generosity, helped develop a culture of fine wine in South Africa and beyond. Always with value and authenticity in mind, the collection spans a wide range of styles from leading producers and diverse regions. The wines were professionally imported under refrigeration and carefully stored at Brice and Burnett (formerly Wine Cellar) thereafter. Many of the producers are not available in South Africa and provide an excellent buying opportunity.

David studied and tasted Bordeaux more than any other region and he purchased en-primeur, or pre-release, for more than 3 decades. He bought the great vintages, loved magnums, and enjoyed the sweet wines of Sauternes. The cellar contains the famous names, but also highly regarded but lesser-known Chateaux and appellations.

For more detailed information on the lots, please feel free to contact Roland Peens (roland@winecellar.co.za). Roland spent many years sharing and enjoying these wines with David Brice and is happy to provide further insight into the collection.

Critics Ratings

“Light but very complete nose. Absolutely classic claret with nothing out of place. All very succulent but dry rather than sweet. A wine that anyone who understands red Bordeaux could not be disappointed by.” - Jancis Robinson MW, JancisRobinson.com, 17.5/20 (Mar 2011)

“Your quintessential Saint-Julien wine with blackberry, cedar, cigar box and a touch of smoke. Very focused with great penetration. Medium-bodied with very fine tannins, superb balance and a superb cedar and tobacco-tinged finish supported by ample red fruits. Great length.” - Neal Martin, Wine Advocate, 92/100 (May 2011)

“Classic notes of black currants, cedar, tobacco leaf and spice box. Displaying better integration of new oak as well as more elegance and finesse than usual. Sweet fruit, pretty flavours and a clean, supple-textured finish.” - Robert Parker, Wine Advocate, 90/100 (Jun 2004)
