About this Item
The 1999 Left Bank harvest produced wines of genuine finesse and vivacity, with Saint-Julien delivering some of the most elegant expressions of the vintage across the Médoc. Château Léoville Poyferré’s 1999 earned 93/100 from Neal Martin, who called it one of his favourite 1999s, praising its lifted, well-defined nose that eschews the more opulent bouquet Didier sometimes conjures, and finding sappy blackberry, boysenberry and strawberry with real vivacity and purity on the finish. Julia Harding MW awarded 17/20, noting its tangy, fresh and fine character with grip and marked acidity giving real length.

Critics Ratings
1998 - “Herbal and sweet undergrowth aromas but also quite cedary. Delicate and evolving nicely. Very good balance though just slightly dry on the finish.” - Julia Harding MW, JancisRobinson.com, 17/20 (May 2009)
“A real succulence to it: black cherries, blood orange, touch of tobacco and iodine. The palate is surprisingly rich, very well structured with lovely, grainy tannins. Very dense, cohesive and focused with layers of ripe, slightly gamey black fruits on the finish. Of all the Poyferrés, this comes closest to Las-Cases in style. A commendable 1998.” - Neal Martin, Wine Advocate (Jan 2000)
1999 -“Tangy and with beginnings of autumn undergrowth. Grip a little more prominent than the fruit? Marked acidity, fine and fresh, and freshness gives length.” - Julia Harding MW, JancisRobinson.com, 17/20 (May 2009)
“One of my favourite 1999s. A very lifted, well-defined nose that eschews the more opulent bouquet that Didier sometimes conjures. Blackberry, cedar, raspberry leaf, pencil shavings. The palate has great vivacity and purity towards the finish. Sappy blackberry, boysenberry and strawberry with a touch of Asian spice.” - Neal Martin, Wine Advocate, 93/100 (Jul 2009)
