About this Item

Pessac-Léognan 2010
3 (1 x 3) 750ml
The 2010 Left Bank harvest is broadly regarded as one of the finest vintages of the modern era, producing wines of remarkable structure and mineral precision across Pessac-Léognan. Château Haut-Bergey’s 2010 earned 92/100 from Robert Parker, who called it a sleeper of the vintage, praising its classic tobacco, smoky barbecue and rich black currant character with Asian plum sauce complexity, and 93/100 from Neal Martin, who found it dense, concentrated and vibrant with a long-term future confirmed by its structured finish full of energy and red fruit. Haut-Bergey was acquired in 1991 by Sylviane Garcin-Cathiard, sister of Daniel Cathiard of Smith Haut-Lafitte, and the Garcin family portfolio encompasses Clos L’Église in Pomerol, Barde-Haut in Saint-Émilion and Château Branon in Pessac-Léognan. The blend is 70% Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% Merlot.

Provenance

The late David Brice was a respected wine connoisseur, collector and co-founder of Brice and Burnett – The Fine Wine Specialists (formerly Wine Cellar). His lifelong passion for wine from all corners of the world wine, and generosity, helped develop a culture of fine wine in South Africa and beyond. Always with value and authenticity in mind, the collection spans a wide range of styles from leading producers and diverse regions. The wines were professionally imported under refrigeration and carefully stored at Brice and Burnett (formerly Wine Cellar) thereafter. Many of the producers are not available in South Africa and provide an excellent buying opportunity.

David studied and tasted Bordeaux more than any other region and he purchased en-primeur, or pre-release, for more than 3 decades. He bought the great vintages, loved magnums, and enjoyed the sweet wines of Sauternes. The cellar contains the famous names, but also highly regarded but lesser-known Chateaux and appellations.

For more detailed information on the lots, please feel free to contact Roland Peens (roland@winecellar.co.za). Roland spent many years sharing and enjoying these wines with David Brice and is happy to provide further insight into the collection.

Critics Ratings

“Classic tobacco leaf and smoky barbecue notes along with rich black currants and crushed rocks in a medium to full-bodied, seductive style. Some Asian plum sauce is also noticeable in this complex, evolved and delicious wine. A sleeper of the vintage.” - Robert Parker, Wine Advocate, 92/100 (Feb 2013)

“A very concentrated bouquet with dense blackberry, briary, crushed stone and tobacco on the nose that unfolds in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with chewy tannins on the entry, but it is in tune with the acidity and the structured finish has plenty of vibrant red fruit and energy to see it through to the long term.” - Neal Martin, Wine Advocate, 93/100 (Mar 2014)
