About this Item

Bordeaux Collection
Lanessan, Lilian Ladouys 2009
2 (1 x 2) 750ml
This lot consists of the following wines:
Lanessan Haut-Médoc 2009 (1 x 750ml)
Lilian Ladouys Saint-Estèphe 2009 (1 x 750ml)

The 2009 Left Bank harvest produced wines of exceptional ripeness, concentration and silky structure, and Château Lanessan’s 2009 is one of the most compelling Cru Bourgeois expressions of the vintage, earning praise from Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate for its ripe black currant, cedar and licorice generosity with silky tannins and beautiful intensity, described as a sleeper of the vintage that should merit an outstanding rating with further cellaring. Jancis Robinson MW awarded 16/20, finding it toasty and appetising on the nose with thick, dense and succulent fruit and good balance. Château Lanessan is one of the most historically distinguished Cru Bourgeois estates in the Haut-Médoc, with documented winemaking activity dating to the sixteenth century and the estate’s distinctive neo-Gothic chateau built in 1878. The property is accompanied by a remarkable private carriage museum housing over forty horse-drawn vehicles from the nineteenth century. The estate is owned by the Bouteiller family and farms predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon with Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot.

Provenance

The late David Brice was a respected wine connoisseur, collector and co-founder of Brice and Burnett – The Fine Wine Specialists (formerly Wine Cellar). His lifelong passion for wine from all corners of the world wine, and generosity, helped develop a culture of fine wine in South Africa and beyond. Always with value and authenticity in mind, the collection spans a wide range of styles from leading producers and diverse regions. The wines were professionally imported under refrigeration and carefully stored at Brice and Burnett (formerly Wine Cellar) thereafter. Many of the producers are not available in South Africa and provide an excellent buying opportunity.

David studied and tasted Bordeaux more than any other region and he purchased en-primeur, or pre-release, for more than 3 decades. He bought the great vintages, loved magnums, and enjoyed the sweet wines of Sauternes. The cellar contains the famous names, but also highly regarded but lesser-known Chateaux and appellations.

For more detailed information on the lots, please feel free to contact Roland Peens (roland@winecellar.co.za). Roland spent many years sharing and enjoying these wines with David Brice and is happy to provide further insight into the collection.

Critics Ratings

Lilian Ladouys Saint-Estèphe 2009
'On the toasty, more modern side of the spectrum, with ambitious roasted fig, apple wood and blueberry confiture notes followed by racy graphite, espresso and blackberry pâte de fruit. Not shy, but has the density for balance. Best from 2013 through 2024.' - James Molesworth, Wine Spectator, 92/100 (Mar 2012)

'Elegant, with loads of black currant fruit, cherries and dusty, loamy soil notes as well as hints of tobacco leaf, spice box and cedar, it is a medium to full-bodied, nicely textured, fleshy wine that should drink nicely for 10-15+ years.' - Robert Parker, Wine Advocate, 90/100 (Dec 2011)

'Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc. The Lorenzettis now own this. Very dark purple. Nose seems a bit simple. Oak in evidence. Embryonic. May get there but it seems more about winemaking than terroir.' - Jancis Robinson MW, JancisRobinson.com, 15.5/20 (Sep 2011)

'Barrel sample. A fine and spicy wine, the wood toast well integrated with the sweet fruit. Deliciously ripe Merlot vies with the Cabernet tannins to give a dark, complex wine.' - Roger Voss, Wine Enthusiast, 93/100 (Aug 2010)

Lanessan Haut-Médoc 2009
“Ripe black currant fruit with some cedarwood, licorice and wood spice in this generously endowed, concentrated Lanessan. The tannins are silky, and the overall impression is one of elegance, plumpness and beautiful intensity. A sleeper of the vintage.” - Robert Parker, Wine Advocate (Dec 2011)

“Toasty and appetising on the nose. Thick and dense and succulent, too. Good balance!” - Jancis Robinson MW, JancisRobinson.com, 16/20 (Apr 2010)
