Notes
Steamer trunks were designed for trans-Atlantic ocean voyages during the 'Golden Age of Travel' in the late 19th and early 20th century. During this time, long distance travel by luxury ocean liners and rail reached its peak in comfort, glamour and accessibility for the wealthy middle class.
Ernest Hofmann was a central European high-end luggage and travel outfitter active in the late 19th to early 20th century. The trunks were built to withstand stacking in the cargo hold of the steamships, hence the flat tops, metal strapping and corner caps.
