About this Item
Biedermeier style figured birch secretaire chest, 19th century
the rectangular crossbanded top above a fall-front secretaire drawer enclosing a fitted interior, above three long graduated drawers flanked by ebonised columns, raised on block feet
height: 98cm; width: 131cm; depth: 65cm
Notes
The interior of this piece suggests it was used as a writing and document cabinet.
It reflects the transition from Empire to Biedermeier practicality, where furniture transitioned from being designed for the aristocracy to being designed for real middle-class homes. The bookmatched walnut veneer patterns, clean restrained design and fitted interior are all key characteristics of this period.
