About this Item

2015 Syrah
6 (1 x 6) 750ml
This unique wine is made from an old single vineyard situated 250m above sea level in the Polkadraai Hills of Stellenbosch. This area is renowned for its amazing granite soils. Today it is one of South Africa's greatest Syrah's.

The 100% whole-bunch fruit is from the same single vineyard as the Boschkloof Epilogue and made by the same winemaker - Reenen Borman. It is a single clone Syrah SH99, whereas Boschkloof is a blend of two clones. However, the Sons of Sugarland falls under the Ron Burgundy Wines umbrella (like the Patatsfontein Chenin Blanc and Patatsblanc Colombard/Chenin Blanc), a three-way joint venture between Reenen Borman, Henk Kotze and Fritz Schoon.

Critics Ratings

‘The debut vintage of this stylishly packaged new Syrah is made by the team that’s behind Patatsfontein (and includes Rhône specialist, Reenen Borman). The result, fermented with 100% whole bunches, is wonderfully scented and refined, with classic pepper spice and tapenade flavours, a hint of oak and remarkable focus.’ – Tim Atkin MW, SA Special Report 2016, 93/100

'Bunch pressing, natural ferment, older oak, as all these, fruit from Stellenbosch, only 75 cases made. A nod to the northern Rhône, 2015 has all the requisite layers but it's how it's been put together that impresses: svelte, seamless & complete.' - Platter's SA Wine Guide 2017, 5*

'Beautiful vibrant purple red cherry colour. The nose is delicately perfumed with bruised black plums, macerated red cherries, sandalwood, wood spice, dried black and green pepper corns, sweet savoury cured meats and a honeysuckle twist. The palate is medium bodied and elegantly classical, very much in the mould of the Northern Rhone masters like Rene Rostaing, where Syrah takes on the weight, focus and texture of Pinot Noir rather than full blown ripe Rhoney Syrah. There are beautifully fine glassy acids elevating the majestic fine, soft silky tannins. This wine is all about subtlety, finesse and femininity and never tries to shout, but rather talks softly with a voice of confident winemaking. The finish is deceptively long, concentrated and suave. Testament to the philosophy that sometimes less is more.' - Greg Sherwood MW, 94/100 (Jan 2017)

'Bramble, licorice root and fresh fynbos lead the nose of this attractive wine, grounded by bold black-cherry and boysenberry fruit at its core. Firmly structured tannins lend serious grip and texture, while fruity flavors transition into waves of olive tapenade, cured meat and peppery spice on the enduring finish. It's drinkable now, but should be best with a bit more time; drink 2020-2025.' - Lauren Buzzeo, Wine Enthusiast, 90/100 (Jan 2018)
