About this Item
The Van Veldens of Stellenbosch estate Overgaauw were the first to introduce traditional port varieties to South Africa, in 1949, when they planted Tinta Barocca, Tinta Francisca, Cornifesto, Souzão and Tinta Roriz. From the start, the grapes were harvested and crushed together, the traditional way, and the port-style wines were described as 'among the soundest in the Cape'.

Critics Ratings
'Made from a vineyard nearly 40 years old. Same five port varieties…planted in same vineyard, harvested together, even though they don't all ripen simultaneously. ("That's the whole point," says Van Velden Snr. "That establishes the special character of the wine.") Complex and fulfilling, rich but not excessive. Moderate alcohol in current 81 (16,8%); two years in oak. Among the soundest in the Cape.' - Platter's SA Wine Guide 1989, 4* (Excellent)
