About this Item

1975, 1979, NV Borges, Ferreira
3 (1 x 3) 750ml

This lot consists of the following Ports:
Borges Vintage Port 1979 (1 x 750ml)
Ferreira Dona Antonia Personal Reserve NV (1 x 750ml)
Ferreira Vintage Port 1975 (1 x 750ml)

Sociedade dos Vinhos Borges was founded in 1884 by brothers Antonio and Francisco Borges, who bought Quinta da Soalheira in São João da Pesqueira, in the Cima Corgo subregion, in 1904. In what was not generally declared a vintage year for Port, Borges declared a 1979 Vintage Port specifically from their Soalheira Vineyard.

Ferreira was founded in 1751 by the Ferreira family of Régua, producers and traders of Port Wines, and it is the only Port Wine company that has always been in Portuguese hands (today owned by Sogrape). It reached great heights in the hands of Dona Antónia Adelaide Ferreira (1811-1896), known as 'Ferreirinha', who invested in the newest and best wines, increasingly efficient production methods, and the careful ageing of wines and maintenance of older wine stocks.

Ferreira Dona Antonia Personal Reserve NV (1 x 750ml)
Dona Antonia Adelaide Ferreira (1811 - 1896), legendary figure in the History of Port, belonged to the fourth generation of a family which had established themselves in the Douro District as growers and shippers. Widowed at the age of 33, she devoted herself with boundless energy and a distinctive business flair to the expansion of her estates and commercial activities creating reputation for the high standards which has been associated with Ferreira to this day. At the same time her deep involvement with the Late Douro people led her to initiate many charitable works, some of which are still operating today. This trait in her character won her the affectionate nick-name of "Ferreirinha" - the good little Ferreira - by which the house of Ferreira is widely known in Portugal.

Dona Antonia's temperament is reflected in the style of the Port that bears her name, combining a gentle smoothness obtained by long maturation with a certain robustness, characteristic of the Douro's best vintages.
