About the SessionIt's rare to witness a collection of vintage ports like what's on offer in the 2025 Strauss winter catalogue. With the cold evenings approaching, these complex beauties are the perfect companions to open before dinner to warm the atmosphere.
About this Item
The Van Veldens of Stellenbosch estate Overgaauw were the first to introduce traditional port varieties to South Africa, in 1949, when they planted Tinta Barocca, Tinta Francisca, Cornifesto, Souzão and Tinta Roriz They were also the first (in 1992) to bottle a 100% Touriga Naçional Port. Today, their much-lauded Cape Vintage is made from all 6 varieties, harvested and crushed together, then fortified with 3-year-old brandy spirits and matured for at least 20 years in bottle prior to release.
This lot consists of the following Ports:

Critics Ratings
'Sometimes mistaken for a Portuguese port, especially older vintages like the now excellent 76… Moderate alcohols recently, around 17-18% alc. 81 had 16,%. Complete and fulfilling, rich but not excessive. 83 bit higher, 17,5%, and pleasantly adjusted sugar at about 100 gms/l.' - Platter's SA Wine Guide 1992, 4* (Excellent)
'Like vintage Port, needs long bottle maturation (spends 2 years in 1500l vats). 84 still vivid purple, tight fresh-earthy flavours; will go for years.' - Platter's SA Wine Guide 1993, 4* (Excellent)
'More than just 5 recognised port varieties (tina barocca, tinta francisca, cornifesto, souzão and tinta roriz) authenticate Portuguese style; also drier, with less fortification, a trend Braam van Velden was following in 84 before others entered this specialist field. Styled as vintage Port (spends 2 years in 1500l vats), requires lengthy bottle maturation, which mostly given on farm. 84 current release, delicious; lots of fresh nutty-earthiness, hint of sweet prunes on smooth palate but finishes earthily dry. Plenty still to give.' - Platter's SA Wine Guide 1993, 4* (Excellent)
