The iconic Helderberg property has title deeds back to 1693 and 2019 marks a century of winemaking heritage. Hennie and Manie Malan recognised the property’s unique terroir for crafting full-bodied red wines early on, but it was Piet du Toit in 1959 who put Alto on top. Vintages from the 1960s, 70s and early 80s are some of South Africa’s finest of the era. The benchmark 2009 competes with 2015 as the best Cabernets produced by Alto remaining true to their classic styling. Bottled in magnum, the 2009 will age well for another decade or more.
‘Dense, powerful and rich. Layered palate ends dry and focused.’ Roland Peens 2019, 94/100
