The iconic Helderberg property has title deeds back to 1693 and marks a century of winemaking heritage this year in 2019. Hennie and Manie Malan recognised the property’s unique terroir for crafting full-bodied red wines early on, but it was Piet du Toit in 1959 who put Alto on top. Heritage and tradition married with evolution and innovation are the hallmarks of this estate, situated in the golden triangle of Stellenbosch. Vintages from the 1960s, 70s and early 80s are some of South Africa’s finest of the era. 1976 is a ripe, almost porty vintage with lots of power and richness, showing remarkable life four decades later.
