About this Item
France 1860-1945
René Lalique 'Formose', opalescent and blue-patinated vase, No. 934, designed 1924
engraved script 'R. Lalique France'
mould-blown glass
height: 17cm; diameter: 16cm
Notes
The name 'Formosa' means 'beautiful island' and is the old European name for Taiwan. Lalique named the vase after it because exotic Asian inspired motifs, such as these Chinese carp, were fashionable at the time.
This vase was listed in the 1928 and 1932 catalogues, and was not reissued after 1947, making it a 'closed model'. All examples are therefore pre-war, and limited to the original production era of René Lalique.
