About this Item
France 1860-1945
René Lalique 'Coquilles' opalescent, frosted and clear glass coupe, No.3201, designed 1924
wheel-engraved 'R. LALIQUE FRANCE NO 2'
press-moulded glass
height: 8cm; diameter: 21cm
Notes
The motif imitates radiating shells, a strong Art Deco theme.
Most opalescent pieces were made between 1925 and 1937. Opalescence is not a surface treatment but rather a chemical that was added to the glass itself, which causes it to change character in different light.
It appeared in 1928 and 1932 catalogues, not continued after 1947, making all examples pre-war René Lalique period.
