"Still lives show up in our mundane lives. For me these small still lives speak of the person who creates it. Just as jewellery says something about the identity of the wearer so do the candles we choose to burn, the fruit and the flowers we arrange and where we put them in our homes. For the brief span before flowers wilt and fruit is eaten, these domestic arrangements quietly mark the passing of time.

My grandmother was a master at creating small still lives across her home with flowers from her garden, often Dahlias. These images changed regularly. Now as I create still life scenes in my home I often think of my Ouma, her garden and the temporality in our homes. I reflect on time. Living on a working Karoo farm nothing speaks of time and change as much as wool and mohair. Therefore, I have chosen to create this brooch mostly from these fibres. The ‘copper vase’ in wool is a hollow vessel that encourages the wearer to arrange their own little bouquet, perhaps only for that wear and as it can’t hold water. It will decay fast.
