About the Session

Art Jewellery in Conversation with Still Life, showcases 15 local art jewellers who have taken one of art’s oldest genres off the wall and made it wearable in the form of brooches, necklaces, rings and other pieces.  This second collaboration between Strauss & Co and Stellenbosch University’s Creative Jewellery and Metal Design Division, brings together new works inspired by modern and contemporary still life, from Alexis Preller and Irma Stern to the humble banana.  On view at the Oude Leeskamer in Stellenbosch from 3 to 11 October during Woordfees, the show runs alongside the art exhibition Anything but Static: A Selection of Modern and Contemporary Still Life, presented in partnership with Strauss & Co.

Fruit-full Dreams
a reversible pendant, with a concave oxidised copper teardrop-shaped form within brushed silver border, the upper section pierced with a scene, the lower section enclosing textured, oxidised and enamelled copper dome held by silver fish forms, the reverse forged into a rounded, dimpled form, suspended from a silver loop and accompanied by a silver chiffon ribbon, hallmarked 925 and with maker’s mark, total weight 45 grams

The pendant is accompanied by a custom handmade box and care instructions from the maker.

Notes

"My works are my universe, from above, underneath and sometimes inside. The structures and marks we make on our planet tell a story. I treasure my story and so I create something small and joyful to leave behind. In this case, as opposed to the peach stuck in the still life painting, this fecund fruit pendant is dreaming about its pip's exciting life."
