About this Item

Collection 1994, 1996, 2000, 2002, 2003
6 (1 x 6) 750ml

Penfolds, founded in 1844, is Australia's most famous wine house, from the iconic Grange down through its celebrated Bin range. This lot gathers a run of its classic Shiraz across three tiers and four vintages, from the mid-1990s to the early 2000s. The Bin 28 Kalimna, here in 1994 and the excellent, cool 2002, is its ripe, robust warm-climate Shiraz, named after the Barossa vineyard; the Bin 128 Coonawarra, in 1996 and 2000, is the cooler-climate, more elegant and peppery counterpoint, the 1996 from a particularly strong Coonawarra vintage; and the Thomas Hyland Shiraz, 2003, comes from the house's more approachable range. Together they make an ideal introduction to the range of Penfolds Shiraz styles.

This lot consists of the following wines:
Penfolds Thomas Hyland Shiraz 2003 (1 x 750ml)
Penfolds Bin 128 Coonawarra Shiraz 2000 (1 x 750ml)
Penfolds Bin 28 Kalimna Shiraz 1994 (1 x 750ml)
Penfolds Bin 128 Coonawarra Shiraz 1996 (1 x 750ml)
Penfolds Bin 28 Kalimna Shiraz 2002 (2 x 750ml)

Critics Ratings

Penfolds Thomas Hyland Shiraz 2003
"Supple and spicy, a medium-weight red with a plum character at the center and earthy, cedary notes around the edges." - Harvey Steiman, Wine Spectator (Sep 2005)

Penfolds Bin 128 Coonawarra Shiraz 2000
"The straightforward, earthy, red and black currant-scented and flavored 2000 Shiraz Bin 128 possesses good spice, medium body, and a short finish." - Robert M. Parker Jr., Robert Parker's Wine Advocate (Aug 2003)

Penfolds Bin 28 Kalimna Shiraz 1994
"The fleshy, sweet, peppery 1994 Shiraz Kalimna Bin 28 is a full-bodied wine revealing moderately intense blackberry fruit along with licorice, smoke, and pepper in the nose. There is not a great deal of complexity in this chewy, dense Shiraz, but it does display plenty of guts and a robust personality....." - Robert M. Parker Jr., Robert Parker's Wine Advocate (Feb 1998)

Penfolds Bin 128 Coonawarra Shiraz 1996
"Crisp, almost bright even though it's almost 4 years old, focusing its plum, spice and tobacco flavors on an elegant frame that feels more like Cabernet but tastes like Shiraz." - Harvey Steiman, Wine Spectator (Dec 1999)

Penfolds Bin 28 Kalimna Shiraz 2002
"Medium ruby. Black cherry, toasty oak, dark chocolate and a subtle leathery note on the nose. Quite thick on the palate, with concentrated flavors of dark plum and bitter chocolate, along with a slight raisiny quality. Chunky and solid on the back end, conveying a distinctly ripe tone." - Josh Raynolds, Vinous (Jul 2005)

"The antithesis of the Bin 128 is Penfolds' 2002 Shiraz Bin 28 Kalimna, which comes from warmer vineyards. A fuller-bodied effort, it possesses sweet berry and plum-like fruit, notions of white chocolate and pepper, a deeper, fleshier feel in the mouth, good exuberance, and a chunky personality." - Robert M. Parker Jr., Robert Parker's Wine Advocate (Oct 2005)
