Max Boullé, born in Curepipe in 1899, was an accomplished painter and architect. After attending Saint-Joseph College in Curepipe, he moved to Paris in 1920, where he attended workshops at the Académie Ranson. It was there that he discovered Neo-Traditionalism and Art Deco.

In 1924, Boullé returned to Mauritius and pursued a dual career as a painter and architect. To further his architectural training, Boullé joined the firm Hall-Genève-Langlois. Boullé's use of materials and embrace of both Neo-Traditionalism and Art Deco contributed to the development of a new aesthetic in the country. At the same time, Boullé continued to practise art, drawing inspiration from his surroundings for his landscape paintings and placing particular emphasis on the depiction of light in his compositions. He participated in numerous exhibitions before his death on May 18, 1965.
