About the Session

Italy dominates the auction, led by a considerable depth of Tuscan greats. Fontodi spans the full range of the estate from the benchmark Chianti Classico through multiple vintages of Flaccianello della Pieve, their iconic Sangiovese IGT, to the crown jewel Vigna del Sorbo Chianti Classico Gran Selezione. The jewel in the crown of Tuscan reds, Brunello di Montalcino is well represented with offerings from Il Poggione, Casanova di Neri, Silvio Nardi, and the rare Gaja Pieve Santa Restituta. A group of curated Italian Collections rounds out the Italian session, offering mixed selections ideal for those seeking range across multiple producers in a single lot.

About this Item

Barolo La Rosa 2001
1 (1 x 1) 750ml
Fontanafredda traces its origins to the 1850s when King Vittorio Emanuele II acquired land at Fontanafredda near Serralunga d'Alba; the La Rosa vineyard takes its name from Rosa Vercellana, known as La Bela Rosin, the king's morganatic wife. One of Barolo's most significant historic estates, it was acquired in 2008 by Oscar Farinetti, founder of the Eataly food and wine group. The 2001 Barolo is from one of the greatest recent vintages - still youthfully concentrated when reviewed by Walter Speller in 2012. Walter Speller from JancisRobinson.com gave it 17 out of 20, Wine Spectator gave it a rating of 90, and Antonio Galloni from Vinous gave it a rating of 91.

Critics Ratings

“Deep ruby with brickstone rim. Still very young nose, very little tertiary development, only a touch of mushroom, but all fruit otherwise. Touch lifted from the alcohol. Youthful palate with fantastic tannin.” - Walter Speller, JancisRobinson.com, 17/20 (Jun 2012)

“Loads of tar and blackberries on the nose. Full-bodied, with soft, round tannins and a pretty fruity finish. This is balanced.” - Wine Spectator, 90/100 (Feb 2006)

“The 2001 Barolo Vigna La Rosa emerges from the glass with sweet rose petals, spices and dried red cherries.....” - Antonio Galloni, Vinous, 91/100 (Apr 2012)
