Rioja Reserva 930 2010

Spain
About the Session

Rioja anchors the Spanish session with a depth and breadth that rewards both traditionalists and modern-style enthusiasts. La Rioja Alta is the most extensively represented producer, with Gran Reserva 904 spanning multiple vintages and formats, alongside the classic Reservas - Viña Ardanza, Viña Alberdi, and Viña Arana. Beyond Rioja, Sierra Cantabria delivers some of the most sought-after names in the sale. Their single-vineyard Amancio across 2002 and 2007, the Finca El Bosque, and the Colección Privada 2003 represent the very top of the Rioja hierarchy.

About this Item

Rioja Reserva 930 2010
5 (1 x 5) 750ml
Contino is a rare example of a single-estate Rioja, a 62-hectare walled vineyard in the Laserna district of Laguardia in Rioja Alavesa, owned by CVNE since 1974 and consistently one of the appellation's most elegant and terroir-driven expressions of Tempranillo. The 2010 vintage is widely regarded as one of the finest in Rioja in a generation, combining exceptional fruit concentration with freshness and structural balance that gives the wines remarkable aging potential. Ferran Centelles from JancisRobinson.com gave it 17.5 out of 20, and Josh Raynolds from Vinous gave it a rating of 93.

Provenance

The late David Brice was a respected wine connoisseur, collector and co-founder of Brice and Burnett – The Fine Wine Specialists (formerly Wine Cellar). His lifelong passion for wine from all corners of the world wine, and generosity, helped develop a culture of fine wine in South Africa and beyond. Always with value and authenticity in mind, the collection spans a wide range of styles from leading producers and diverse regions. The wines were professionally imported under refrigeration and carefully stored at Brice and Burnett (formerly Wine Cellar) thereafter. Many of the producers are not available in South Africa and provide an excellent buying opportunity.

Critics Ratings

“Very clean and pure expression showing fleshy red and blue berries, cedar notes, cloves, tobacco and tea leaves. It has moderate and integrated acidity, quite delicate on the palate for such an intense nose, classy earthy tannins and lingering sensation based on sweet spices. It is an authentic and pure rioja style, very good wine.” - Ferran Centelles, JancisRobinson.com, 17.5/20 (Jun 2016)

“Brilliant ruby-red. A heady, expansive bouquet evokes ripe red and dark berries, cherry compote, vanilla and cigar box, and a sexy floral nuance emerges slowly. Smooth and seamless on the palate, offering sweet, concentrated blackberry, cherry-vanilla and mocha flavors that are firmed and given spine by a core of juicy acidity. Rich yet vibrant in style, displaying impressive finishing clarity, smooth tannins and a lingering spicecake flourish.” - Josh Raynolds, Vinous, 93/100 (Oct 2016)
