About the Session

Italy dominates the auction, led by a considerable depth of Tuscan greats. Fontodi spans the full range of the estate from the benchmark Chianti Classico through multiple vintages of Flaccianello della Pieve, their iconic Sangiovese IGT, to the crown jewel Vigna del Sorbo Chianti Classico Gran Selezione. The jewel in the crown of Tuscan reds, Brunello di Montalcino is well represented with offerings from Il Poggione, Casanova di Neri, Silvio Nardi, and the rare Gaja Pieve Santa Restituta. A group of curated Italian Collections rounds out the Italian session, offering mixed selections ideal for those seeking range across multiple producers in a single lot.

About this Item

Giusto di Notri Toscana 2012
3 (1 x 3) 750ml
Founded in 1984 by Rita Tua and Virgilio Bisti in Suvereto in the Val di Cornia, Tua Rita was the first winery to produce Cabernet-based wines south of Bolgheri in coastal Tuscany; their 2000 Redigaffi was the first Italian wine to receive a perfect 100-point score from Robert Parker, cementing the estate as a standard-bearer for the region. Giusto di Notri, first produced in 1992, is the estate's flagship Bordeaux blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc, named after the church of San Giusto in Suvereto and the Notri estate. The 2012, from a warm and concentrated Tuscan vintage, is a powerful and imposing expression of this celebrated wine. Walter Speller from JancisRobinson.com gave it 16.5 out of 20, and Antonio Galloni from Vinous gave it a rating of 94.

Provenance

The late David Brice was a respected wine connoisseur, collector and co-founder of Brice and Burnett – The Fine Wine Specialists (formerly Wine Cellar). His lifelong passion for wine from all corners of the world wine, and generosity, helped develop a culture of fine wine in South Africa and beyond. Always with value and authenticity in mind, the collection spans a wide range of styles from leading producers and diverse regions. The wines were professionally imported under refrigeration and carefully stored at Brice and Burnett (formerly Wine Cellar) thereafter. Many of the producers are not available in South Africa and provide an excellent buying opportunity.

For more detailed information on the lots, please feel free to contact Roland Peens (roland@briceandburnett.co.za). Roland spent many years sharing and enjoying these wines with David Brice and is happy to provide further insight into the collection.

Critics Ratings

“Deep ruby. Lifted cherry and cassis with a hint of oak and vanilla, skilful rather than exciting. Some tobacco notes intermingle with the rich cherry fruit, but the acidity keeps everything fresh and supple.” - Walter Speller, JancisRobinson.com, 16.5/20 (Jan 2017)

“A dark, brooding wine, the 2012 Giusto di Notri presents a compelling array of dark stone fruits, grilled herbs, smoke, tobacco and menthol. The power of Suvereto and these Bordeaux varieties are both super-expressive in a virile, imposing wine loaded with personality and gorgeous, totally resonant fruit. This is a terrific showing.” - Antonio Galloni, Vinous, 94/100 (May 2014)
