About the Session

The Port session is a true treasure trove for collectors of Cape and Portuguese fortified wines. It is rare to encounter a collection of vintage Ports such as those featured in the 2026 Strauss Winter Catalogue. With the colder evenings approaching, these complex and beautifully layered wines make the perfect companions to open before dinner, adding warmth and atmosphere to any gathering.

About this Item

Cape Vintage Reserve 2001
1 (1 x 1) 750ml
The Nel Family has long prided itself on crafting the very finest Cape fortifieds utilising Portuguese varieties (including Touriga Naçional from the mid-1990s), traditional vinification and dedication to style, to create wine that offer decades of enjoyment. 'Reserve' indicates vintage of recognised quality and wood ageing for at least a year.

The 2001 vintage produced a distinctive and age worthy Cape Vintage Reserve, a classy port that Platter's South African Wine Guide awarded 4.5 stars for its fynbos scents and beautifully moderated richness, and that Tim Atkin MW scored 94 points in his 2023 SA Special Report.

Critics Ratings

'Distinctive & age-worthy version, classy '01 has fynbos scents and beautifully moderated richness. Boosted by maturing Touriga vines & ungrafted ±30 yr- old tinta (blend also including dash Souzao). As always, sugar, alc & acid well-balanced for edgier, gripper style - with elegance. Exciting long-term potential.' - Platter's SA Wine Guide 2004, 4.5

“Showing the kind of longevity in bottle that would put a smile on the face of a top Port producer, this 2001 Vintage Reserve is impressively dense, youthful and layered, all fig, mulberry and liquorice flavours, well-handled spirit, grippy tannins and undertones of aniseed and black pepper. 2024-30.” - Tim Atkin MW, SA Special Report 2023, 94/100
