Critics Ratings
2004:
"Cape fortifieds are not as well known or appreciated as they deserve to be and this is one of the very best of them. Mature, complex yet still full of life, it has flavours of dark chocolate, balsam, sweet spices and black fig, with perfectly judged 99 grams of sugar and remarkable palate length. 2021–2030." - Tim Atkin MW, SA Special Report 2021, 95/100
2005:
"Still concentrated and comparatively youthful at nearly twenty years of age, this is a dense, layered cuvée of Touriga Nacional, 15% Souzão and 5% Tinta Barocca. Flavours of dark chocolate, fig and molasses are framed by serious tannins, old wood and 83 grams of sugar. Very good now but will be even better in a decade's time. 2024–2030." - Tim Atkin MW, SA Special Report 2024, 94/100
2006:
"Very deep, blackish crimson. Very rich, round and yet explosive. Like the sweetest form of tea, sort of meat tea, a Victorian pick-me-up. Tannins remarkable but the fruit suggests it will sustain the wine while the tannins subside. Tastes as though it would do you good! Very rich. Very sweet but still pretty chewy." - Jancis Robinson MW, JancisRobinson.com (December 2012), 17/20
"Fifty cases of this amazing mature Port have just been re-released, underlining how well the best Cape fortifieds age. Still rich and deeply coloured, it's tarry, tannic, scented and sweet with fig and blackberry fruit, some liquorice and dense tannins. 2020–2028." - Tim Atkin MW, SA Special Report 2018, 95/100
