About the Session

A rich offering of vintage wines that have stood the test of time. Wine Specialist, Higgo Jacobs comments “These categories have strong historical ties with South Africa's wine industry, and they remain underrated in terms of bandwidth and prices, while consistently over-delivering on quality.”

About this Item

Coteaux du Layon 2002
4 (1 x 4) 750ml
Coteaux du Layon is one of the Loire Valley's most celebrated appellations for botrytised Chenin Blanc, producing sweet wines with remarkable aromatic complexity, balance, and ageing potential.

The 2002 Loire Valley vintage produced sweet wines of great balance and vivacity, and Moulin Touchais' 2002 Coteaux du Layon is a fine example of the appellation's potential in a cooler year, sweet yet elegant with a touch of medicinal botrytis alongside apricots, orange segments and hints of ground almonds, very charming with real freshness and a long finish. Rebecca Gibb MW at Vinous awarded 93 points and John Gilman at View From the Cellar gave it 94+ points.

Provenance

The late David Brice was a respected wine connoisseur, collector and co-founder of Brice and Burnett – The Fine Wine Specialists (formerly Wine Cellar). His lifelong passion for wine from all corners of the world wine, and generosity, helped develop a culture of fine wine in South Africa and beyond. Always with value and authenticity in mind, the collection spans a wide range of styles from leading producers and diverse regions. The wines were professionally imported under refrigeration and carefully stored at Brice and Burnett (formerly Wine Cellar) thereafter. Many of the producers are not available in South Africa and provide an excellent buying opportunity.

For more detailed information on the lots, please feel free to contact Roland Peens (roland@briceandburnett.co.za). Roland spent many years sharing and enjoying these wines with David Brice and is happy to provide further insight into the collection.

Critics Ratings

"Really beautiful, and though not as marked by botrytis as the legend in the making 2005, there is depth, complexity and personality to burn. Pure, full-bodied, with impeccable focus and grip, blossoming complexity and great length and cut on the very long finish. Should prove to be an exceptional year of Moulin Touchais and will drink beautifully for decades." – John Gilman, View From the Cellar, 94+/100 (Sep 2015)

"Hailing from a cooler vintage, the 2002 Moulin Touchais offers great balance and vivacity. Sweet yet elegant, with a touch of medicinal botrytis alongside apricots, orange segments and hints of ground almonds. Very charming, with real freshness and a long finish." – Rebecca Gibb MW, Vinous, 93/100 (Apr 2021)
