Notes
This piece embodies Sett & Beat’s commitment to elevating reclaimed materials into meaningful, enduring design. Crafted from recycled denim using the Japanese sakiori technique—an 18th century weaving method in which worn cloth is torn into strips and re-woven—it anchors global tradition within an African context. Its visual rhythm draws from historic strip-weave textiles, such as the exceptional prestige wraps (Kente) of the Ewe and Ashanti, acknowledging the artistry and symbolism that have shaped the continent’s cultural identity.
Locally spun mohair yarn brings warmth and structural integrity, while each panel is reinforced with hand-stitched, locally dyed wool. This added layer of work echoes ancient decorative practices found across cultures, underscoring a universal respect for handcraft and material longevity.
The result is an artwork that stands against disposable production and affirms the value of deliberate making. Every fibre, process, and touch is chosen with intention. Designed to endure and meant to be treasured, it reflects a belief in creating with consciousness rather than convenience—honouring heritage, sustaining craft, and transforming what is often discarded into something worthy of being kept and passed on.
