Notes
This finely worked Ndebele mopoto exemplifies the visual sophistication and precision of early Ndebele beadwork. Constructed on a softened hide ground and densely embroidered with glass beads, the apron is organised into bold, rectilinear compartments articulated by stepped motifs and rhythmic bands of colour. The restrained palette—earthy browns offset by white, blue, green, and red accents—reflects an aesthetic typical of early to mid 20th-century aprons, which featured a white bead base with minimal, dark-colored geometric patterns. From the 1950s and 60s onward, colours became more vibrant, incorporating green, blue, purple, and black against the white, reflecting a "renaissance" in beadwork.
