Notes
South African artist Gabrielle Kruger has developed an artistic practice that pushes the conventions of traditional painting. She experiments with acrylic paint as a dynamic medium by blurring the boundaries between painting and sculpture.
Kruger’s research-led, process-based practice re-defines the conventions of painting through radical experimentation with the materiality of acrylics. Kruger has developed a process with her own unique paint formula that mimics the viscosity of glue when wet and the elasticity of rubber when dry. By extruding and drying pieces of paint to assemble the painting, the paint becomes a tangible material to sculpt, collage or weave with. Since 2017, Kruger has extruded long ribbons of paint which she physically weaves with, turning painting into a type of tapestry. ‘ Stitched Paint Weave ’ (2025) is sewn to the canvas with cotton thread. Using the traditional mode of textile in combination with this unconventional technique of physical painting, this work merges two formal disciplines and blurs boundaries between traditions of art and craft.
