About this Item
Chinese hand-painted silk wall panel, 20th century
depicting small birds amongst magnolia and peony blossoms on a beige silk ground enclosed in a rosewood frame, unexamined out of the frame
height: 91cm; width: 158cm
Notes
The classic Chinese 'flower and bird' motif seen in this screen symbolises peace and prosperity.
During the 1950s-70s, there was a strong wave of interest in Chinese-inspired design, called 'chinoiserie'. Chinese studios produced high-quality decorative paintings on silk for export to the West, which were popular in homes and hotels.
