About this Item
Pair of Empire style mahogany upholstered armchairs, late 19th century
each with upholstered back and seat, downswept arms terminating in carved pharaonic bust supports, raised on tapering square-section legs terminating in paw feet
(2)
height: 92cm; width: 61cm; depth: 41cm
Notes
These armchairs are executed in the Egyptian Revival taste, a style that gained prominence in Europe following Napoleon's campaign in Egypt and enjoyed periodic revivals throughout the 19th century.
The most striking feature, the carved arm supports in the form of stylised Egyptian heads, recalls ancient pharaonic iconography and reflects the 19th century fascination with antiquity.
