For 27 years, Frans Smit served as Spier’s distinguished Cellar Master, playing a pivotal role in shaping the modern identity of the winery. In honour of his remarkable contribution and enduring legacy, the Frans K. Smit wines embody the pinnacle of Spier’s winemaking excellence. Produced in limited quantities, these coveted blends are celebrated for their complexity, finesse, and global appeal.

Following his handover of the Cellar Master role to Johan Jordaan in 2021, Frans continues to collaborate closely with Johan on select projects - most notably, this exclusive wine - ensuring the continuation of a shared vision in both vineyard and cellar.

The red blend typically features Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Shiraz, with other varieties incorporated depending on the vintage.

In 2022, Spier introduced a collection of three single-varietal Frans K. Smit Special Release wines: Cabernet Franc, Merlot, and Cabernet Sauvignon - each limited to just 800 bottles, and presented in a handcrafted wooden box.
