Notes
Since his teenage years, David Reade has been immersed in the fiery world of glassblowing. A visit to an Isle of Wight studio at the age of sixteen, captivated him so deeply that he spent three weeks persuading them to take him on and then seven years of dedicated apprenticeship with them. Four decades later, after relocating to South Africa in 1984, he is widely regarded as the nation’s foremost glassblower. He is renowned for both functional and sculptural creations and makes his own clear glass from “true Cape sand.” Each piece begins as a molten glob on an iron pipe, which his assistant blows into while he meticulously shapes it with handheld tools.
