A rare Japanese Arita blue and white charger, Edo period, 17th/18th century
painted with a female attendant with a hand puppet entertaining two little boys in a dwelling before a river, with an attendant carrying a barrel away from the river and a little boy standing in a sampan with further barrels, the border painted with shell and scroll motifs, the whole with copper red and gilt highlights, blue-painted mark of commendation, rivetted hairline cracks, 41,3cm diameter
