About this Item
In 2012, owner Richard Kershaw MW, established Richard Kershaw Wines to create clonally selected, site-specific, cool climate wine paradigms from apposite noble grapes i.e. ones with the ability to produce world-class examples. SA's coolest wine district, Elgin Valley, reflected these principles benefitting from higher altitude, ocean proximity, specific cloud cover sequencing, high cold units and a large diurnal range, enabling the germane grapes, Chardonnay, Syrah and more recently Pinot Noir, to show a sense of place.

'From five different clones. Matured for 11 months in French oak barrels of different sizes, 12% new. Very primary on the nose with notes of floral perfume, red cherry, cranberry and pomegranate plus a little reduction. The palate is most appealing with great fruit definition, bright acidity and lovely ripe tannins. A wine of particular clarity and balance.'
'The 2017 Elgin Pinot Noir contains no stems this year, as Kershaw felt that the cooler growing season did not suit whole bunches. It also did more délestage instead of punch-down to keep the savory aspect of the WO. That comes through on the nose, which is quite lifted and perfumed, with a subtle dried blood/ferrous character coming through with aeration. The medium-bodied palate offers fleshy red fruit on the entry, tightening toward the middle, where it becomes more linear. There are conspicuous clove and meaty notes toward the finish, which lingers in the mouth. This is very classy. 2019-2032' - Neal Martin, Vinous, 93/100 (Oct 2019)
'The nose of the 2017 Clonal Selection Elgin Pinot Noir is precise with rose tones and accents of cherry and strawberry. The palate is slightly tart with good acidity and has a focused core that brings pleasure. The finish is fine, well balanced and long. Search this producer out! Kershaw is working with a few different French Pinot clones here, such as 777, 667, 115, 114 and 113. Perhaps one day we will get a deconstructed range of clonal-specific Pinots from Kershaw? 5,850 bottles were made. 2019-2035' - Anthony Mueller, Wine Advocate, 91/100 (Oct 2019)
