About this Item

A Cape stinkwood side table, late 18th century the shaped two-plank rectangular top with canted corners above a shaped frieze, on square-section tapering fluted legs, 71,5cm high, 78cm wide, 55cm deep

Notes

The discovery of the ruins of Pompeii and Herculaneum led to the revival of simplicity and classical form throughout Europe. This new Neo-classical style which was introduced to the Cape by French troops in the late 18th century, replaced the frivolity and exuberance of the Rococo style with clean straight lines.

Tables such as this one constructed entirely of stinkwood are relatively rare.
