Irma Stern’s striking oil portrait from 1956, Lot 226, Woman with Blue Headscarf (estimate R2 000 000 – R3 000 000), is one of a number of remarkable works from the collection of Liselotte and Walter Hardebeck going under the hammer at Strauss & Co’s upcoming 7 November sale in Johannesburg. Other notable works from this collection include Lot 223, Stern’s Watussi Chief’s Wife (with Head Dress), a charcoal drawing from 1946 (estimate R200 000 – 300 000), and a group of five little-seen works by Alexis Preller.

CAPE TOWN – After a long and uncharacteristically wet winter, Strauss & Co is pleased to usher in the warming spring months with September Auction Week, a series of five curated sales of modern and contemporary art, photography, furniture, design and ceramics (16 – 18 September 2024). The exciting programme includes a standalone live-virtual auction of early works by renowned artist-potter Hylton Nel, as well as Strauss & Co’s first-ever stand-alone photography.

August ART, with a focus on art from KwaZulu-Natal

The timed online auction includes works that range from unique ceramics, textiles and sculptures to expressive paintings. The sale highlights KwaZulu-Natal artists through a selection of works that celebrate the rich artistic heritage of the region with historically significant pieces by established artists as well as contemporary works by emerging artists. Key historical names include artists such as Nils Andersen, Christopher Tugwell, John Ferguson, and Kathleen Anderson.
