Gordon Newton Johnson - Newton Johnson Family Vineyards - Chardonnay 2018

This is a captivating blend of three vineyard sites on the farm, each with a unique exposure to the sun. The granitic slopes and well-drained gravelly soil, mostly quartz, pink feldspar and mica, contribute to the wine's crystalline flavour profile. The south-facing Chardonnay vineyards produce agile wines with nervy acidity, while the north-facing slopes deliver weight without being heavy. The wine is made using a natural approach to winemaking, ensuring a complex array of characters.

In the glass, the wine is luminescent with abundant layers of complex flavour. Ripe citrus and white peach are infused with ornate spices and lime zest. The fleshiness of the wine balances the razor-sharp purity of the granite soil influence, while the brittle crunch in the structure hems in the lush texture. This Chardonnay is compelling and energetic, with a long flavour and clear-cut structure that showcases the versatility of the variety.
