About this Item

Cape Colony
Five Cape silver fiddle and shell pattern spoons, John Townsend, c.1824-1841
410g all in
(5)
length: 21cm

Provenance

The Mary Eleanor Hibbert collection.

Notes

Many Cape silversmiths, particularly those born at the Cape, followed the continental practice of making the bowl and stem separately and then joining them. For practical reasons, the drops were, therefore, used well into the 19th century. A few spoons were made with escallop shell or floral motifs at the stem junction.

Literature

Stephen Welz (1976) silver and silversmiths, Cape Town: A.A Balkema, pages 90-95
