About this Item

Brunello di Montalcino Cielo d'Ulisse 2018
6 (1 x 6) 750ml

Podere Le Ripi is a biodynamic Montalcino estate, owned by Francesco Illy of the Illy coffee family, making pure, elegant Sangiovese in the south-west of the appellation. Cielo d'Ulisse is one of its Brunello bottlings, from vineyards ringed by woodland that temper the warmth. 2018 was a cool, elegant Brunello vintage. Monica Larner from Robert Parker's Wine Advocate gave it a rating of 93, Eric Guido from Vinous gave it 92, and Walter Speller gave it 17.5 out of 20.

Critics Ratings

"The 2018 Brunello di Montalcino Cielo d'Ulisse wafts up from the glass with a perfumed mix of violets and roses complementing dried blueberries and hints of smoke. It's silky and cool-toned in feel, with racy acidity guiding its tart wild berry fruit. Blue and purple-toned inner florals linger, along with licorice and chalky tannins, as the 2018 finishes lightly structured and long. Cielo d'Ulisse hails from the Podere Le Ripi vineyards in the southwest of Montalcino, yet the vines are surrounded by woods that help to balance the warmth of the location." - Eric Guido, Vinous, 92/100 (Oct 2022)

"The Podere le Ripi 2018 Brunello di Montalcino Cielo d'Ulisse shows a spicy character with clove and white pepper. Those notes are faint, but they do help to uphold dark layers of dried cherry and blackcurrant. There is a point of sour fruit on the close of this mid-weight Brunello. The wine's structure is lean and fine." - Monica Larner, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, 93/100 (Mar 2023)

"Deep, youthful ruby. Profound raspberry fruit nose with minerally hints. Lots of concentrated, juicy fruit, yet complex, layered and with gripping tannins. Has bags of everything and yet retains an elegant palate weight. Impeccably balanced. Irresistible." - Walter Speller, JancisRobinson.com, 17.5/20 (Dec 2022)
