Notes
Donald Grant was an English painter born in North Shields, Northumberland, who painted continuously throughout an early career as a shipbuilding draughtsman, illustrator, and designer for major brands such as Rolls Royce, Massey Ferguson, and Cadbury. Grant achieved significant acclaim in the 1960s with a series of oil paintings depicting hot-air balloons in flight, garnering early attention from the Royal Academy, before ultimately establishing himself as one of Britain's foremost wildlife artists. Renowned particularly for his scenes of the African savannah, Grant captured the delicate light, atmosphere, and inhabitants of the landscape in an intensely cinematic, realistic style while remaining a passionate advocate for nature conservation and animal welfare throughout his life.
