The Opera, Stone

About the Session

The Toyota Stellenbosch Woordfees Benefit Auction forms an integral part of Strauss & Co’s ongoing partnership with one of South Africa’s leading arts festivals. Now in its fifth year, the auction reflects a shared commitment to supporting the visual arts and creating meaningful opportunities for artists and collectors. Held at Stellenbosch Town Hall and accompanied by a curated preview exhibition, the auction brings together works by both emerging and established artists. Its intention is to encourage new and seasoned collectors to engage with and invest in South African art, while expanding the market and improving access to the work of leading local artists. At its core, the auction places artistic excellence at the centre while seeking to create greater visibility and recognition for contemporary artistic practice.

Notes

Renée Rossouw was born in 1985 and is an artist, designer and architect based in Cape Town. She obtained a Master of Architecture from the University of Cape Town in 2009 and was then one of thirteen students selected for the Master’s programme in product design at European Design Labs, Madrid, under Jaime Hayon.

Graphic, bold and colourful, her artworks draw on a vast personal library of shapes and patterns, observed, recorded and abstracted over many years in sketchbooks and on walls. Career highlights include collaborations with IKEA in 2017 and 2019, participation in the Venice Biennale, Salone del Mobile in Milan and Design Indaba, and selection as Feature Designer at 100% Design South Africa, where she received the Best Product Design award in 2015. She was named one of the Mail & Guardian’s 200 Young South Africans in 2012. Rossouw held a solo exhibition, Simboliek, at Voorkamer Gallery (2016) and has shown with WORLDART, Smith Studio and Salon 91. She also lectures at UCT’s School of Architecture.
