About the SessionThe Toyota Stellenbosch Woordfees Benefit Auction forms an integral part of Strauss & Co’s ongoing partnership with one of South Africa’s leading arts festivals. Now in its fifth year, the auction reflects a shared commitment to supporting the visual arts and creating meaningful opportunities for artists and collectors. Held at Stellenbosch Town Hall and accompanied by a curated preview exhibition, the auction brings together works by both emerging and established artists. Its intention is to encourage new and seasoned collectors to engage with and invest in South African art, while expanding the market and improving access to the work of leading local artists. At its core, the auction places artistic excellence at the centre while seeking to create greater visibility and recognition for contemporary artistic practice.

Notes
Katherine Bull is a South African artist who has exhibited extensively in South Africa and abroad. Before joining the University of Cape Town, she spent ten years lecturing in the Department of Visual Arts at Stellenbosch University. Her work investigates the impact of the digital on printmaking and the archive, and the ways visual representation mediates the body’s orientation in time and space. These ideas are developed in her ongoing data project (2004–present), a sequence of digital drawing performances, and more recently in works made in analogue media from digital sources. In Treading Soft Ground (2014), a live print performance with Warren Editions, she drew simultaneously with her left and right hands onto copper plates from a live webcam view of Cape Town, producing a suite of soft-ground etchings. She has also made large-format linocuts published by the Spier Arts Trust.
