Mullineux is one of the Swartland's most acclaimed estates, run by Chris and Andrea Mullineux from Riebeeksrivier. Its Straw Wine is a rich, unfortified dessert wine made from air-dried Chenin Blanc, fermented and matured in old barrels, and regarded as one of the Cape's finest. Neal Martin from Robert Parker's Wine Advocate gave it a rating of 96, Jancis Robinson gave it 18 out of 20, and James Molesworth from Wine Spectator gave it a rating of 93.

Critics Ratings

"The 2009 Straw Wine, the only vintage that I have never tasted, has a more resinous, perhaps less charming nose than the 2008. It is certainly nicely defined with marmalade, tangerine, melted wax and a touch of cinnamon. The palate is beautifully balanced and offers more freshness than the debut release. I prefer the acidity here and the purity, gliding along with honey, acacia, peach and a touch of spice. It feels long and tender, very harmonious. If the aromatics matched the palate, this would be sensational." - Neal Martin, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, 96/100 (Nov 2015)

"Pale coppery colour and awfully viscous but thanks to the acidity of Chenin Blanc, this from a single parcel of nearly 30 year-old vines, this has great refreshment value too. Lovely balance and delightfully approachable already. This was probably very difficult to make." - Jancis Robinson, JancisRobinson.com, 18/20 (Jun 2010)

"Opulent, boasting thickly textured fig, date, clove, dried blood orange and persimmon notes that weave through the long, unctuous, maple-tinged finish. A great tug of acidity at the end pulls you back for more. Chenin Blanc." - James Molesworth, Wine Spectator, 93/100 (Nov 2010)
