This pair brings together two of the modern Cape’s most admired reds, both from the 2015 vintage, widely rated one of the greatest in recent South African history. Anwilka, on the Helderberg slopes of Stellenbosch, was founded as a joint venture between two Bordeaux luminaries, Bruno Prats, formerly of Château Cos d’Estournel, and Hubert de Boüard of Château Angélus, together with Klein Constantia, in whose stable it now sits; its flagship is a Syrah-led blend of unusual polish and power. Boekenhoutskloof, tucked into the furthest corner of the Franschhoek valley on a farm first settled in 1776, was revived in the 1990s by Marc Kent and has become one of South Africa’s most sought-after names, the seven chairs on its label a nod to its founding partners. Its Franschhoek Cabernet Sauvignon is a cool, cedar-scented classic of real depth and refinement. Two estates, two philosophies, one great vintage.

"The 2015 Anwilka is a blend of 29% Cabernet Sauvignon, 64% Shiraz and 7% Petit Verdot fermented in tronconic tanks and matured in 50% new French oak for 14 months. It has a very refined bouquet of pure black currant and bilberry fruit, less powerful yet more composed than some of the earlier vintages of Anwilka. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannins, well-judged acidity and notes of blackberry, pain grillé, white pepper and clove. "The 2015 Anwilka is open-knit on the nose with a tight, dark core of dusty, chewy fruit. With 64% Syrah, 29% Cabernet Sauvignon and 7% Petit Verdot, there is dusty blackberry, bitter dark chocolate and black pepper spices that all mingle on the nose and mid-palate. Toward the finish, the back is structured and tight, with slightly grainy tannins that will last for years to come. The wine ends with a bold, long finish.
