Notes
The present lot forms part of a series of photographs created on the set of the popular South African soap opera, Generations. The programme seeks to depict the country's emerging black middle class against the backdrop of a media company. The cast has no major white characters, and much of the script is delivered in Nguni languages.
The shoot for this work took place over a two-week period, during which Breitz inserted herself, sometimes awkwardly and absurdly, into a number of scenes; the cast was instructed to ignore the artist's presence as much as possible. Each scene was first shot for broadcast purposes and then repeated for an extra take in which the artist was present. Through her absurd positioning within the scene, the artist created an uncomfortably amusing dialogue, raising questions about what it means to be white in the context of post-apartheid South Africa.1
