About this Item

Collection 2018
6 (3 x 2) 750ml
Storm Wines is the project of Hannes Storm, the long-time Hamilton Russell winemaker, dedicated to single-vineyard Pinot Noir from the cool Hemel-en-Aarde. This lot brings together his trio from the 2018 vintage: Ignis, the lightest and most delicate, from a north-facing decomposed-granite slope; Ridge, from the stony, clay-rich soils of the Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge; and Vrede, the most structured and powerful, from the clay and limestone of the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley. Together they map three distinct terroirs of one of the Cape’s finest cool-climate districts, here in the concentrated, drought-shaped 2018 vintage.

This lot consists of the following wines:
Storm Wines Ignis Pinot Noir 2018 (2 x 750ml)
Storm Wines Ridge Pinot Noir 2018 (2 x 750ml)
Storm Wines Vrede Pinot Noir 2018 (2 x 750ml)

Provenance

The late David Brice was a respected wine connoisseur, collector and co-founder of Brice and Burnett – The Fine Wine Specialists (formerly Wine Cellar). His lifelong passion for wine from all corners of the world wine, and generosity, helped develop a culture of fine wine in South Africa and beyond. Always with value and authenticity in mind, the collection spans a wide range of styles from leading producers and diverse regions. The wines were professionally imported under refrigeration and carefully stored at Brice and Burnett (formerly Wine Cellar) thereafter. Many of the producers are not available in South Africa and provide an excellent buying opportunity.

For more detailed information on the lots, please feel free to contact Roland Peens (roland@briceandburnett.co.za). Roland spent many years sharing and enjoying these wines with David Brice and is happy to provide further insight into the collection.

Critics Ratings

Storm Wines Ignis Pinot Noir 2018
“The 3 Storm Pinots treated identically in the cellar (except for 3% variance in new-oak portion) to express terroir. From more light-structured decomposed granite of Upper Hemel-en-Aarde, Ignis more fruit forward than siblings and thus more approachable in youth but with such precise acid tension it could easily prove the most long-lived. 2018 exceptional pure-fruited charm; long-lingering 2017 (97 pts) unshowy but similar honed athletic frame. Both 30% new wood. Also in magnum.” - Platter's SA Wine Guide 2020, 5* (96/100)

“Ignis comes from a north-facing site opposite the Newton Johnsons' cellar, located on stony granite soils. Grippy, sappy and crunchy, with the freshness of a cooler slope, refined tannins, notes of fynbos and cassis leaf and a long, tapering finish. Classy Pinot. 2020-26.” - Tim Atkin MW, SA Special Report 2019, 95/100

Storm Wines Ridge Pinot Noir 2018
“From clay-rich, low-crop Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge soil, this typically more unsettled in youth, all elements finely judged but needing a year or 2 to harmonise. 2018's black cherry and plum fruit brushed with savoury oak spice (28% new).” - Platter's SA Wine Guide 2020, 4.5* (94/100)

“Block 1 at La Vierge is the source of this Ridge Pinot Noir, planted in 2010 with clones 113 and 115. It's the lightest, tautest and most aromatic of Hannes' Storm's enviable range, with herbal, scented, wild strawberry fruit and a dusting of whole bunch spices. 2021-27.” - Tim Atkin MW, SA Special Report 2019, 94/100

Storm Wines Vrede Pinot Noir 2018
“Hallmark fruity-savoury persistence, brooding intensity from bouquet to finish on Hemel-en-Aarde Valley offering. Compact body, latent power from clay-rich, low-vigour Bokkeveld soil most noticeable on 2017; 2018 showing more of the vineyard's overt acid character. Both deserve 5+ years cellaring to deliver on potential. New oak 28% and 30% respectively. Also in 1.5L. Natural ferment, as all the wines; unfined/filtered as all reds.” - Platter's SA Wine Guide 2020, 4.5* (94/100)

“How time has flown! This is now the eighth release of Vrede, grown on clay rich soils at the lower end of the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley. North-facing at the top of the slope, it's Hannes Storm's plushest Pinot, with good density and structure, artfully integrated oak and an earthy bass note. 2021-28.” - Tim Atkin MW, SA Special Report 2019, 96/100
