Provenance
The Coats Family Cellar is arguably the most prestigious fine wine collection ever offered in South Africa. It contains an expansive collection of the worlds finest, most sought-after wines, spanning over 150 years. Collected over many decades, the cellar was imported from Ireland to South Africa via refrigerated container. Each bottle within the Coats Family Cellar was authenticated by Michael Egan in August 2022 and given an ID number for tracking.
Michael Egan is a world-expert in fine and rare wines with more than thirty five years of experience. He was the principal expert for the plaintiff in the two major wine counterfeiting trials in Koch v. Eric Greenberg and United States v. Rudy Kurniawan, both of which occurred in 2013.
Along with Michael Egan, the Strauss & Co Fine Wine team have tasted extensively through the cellar and are confident of the wine storage and hence quality.
Critics Ratings
Romanée-Conti Richebourg 2000
“The 2000 Richebourg Grand Cru is far better than the ’98 on this occasion. Open-knit on the nose and quite ferrous, it gains cohesion with hints of peat and black truffle. This is very charming. The palate is medium-bodied and fleshier than I presupposed, with fine acidity and the structure and length you want from a Richebourg. Hints of candied orange peel build towards the finish. Maybe a little saccharine in style, this is a charming millennial DRC that has much to offer after 25 years. Tasted at the Richebourg vertical dinner in Taipei.” - Neal Martin, Vinous, 93/100 (Sep 2024)
“An exuberantly spicy and notably ripe nose displays discreet notes of torrefaction and roasted espresso beans on the overtly floral-suffused aromas. The muscular flavors are supported by ripe tannins and plenty of minerality, both of which carry over to the dusty, complex and solidly long finish. This is really quite regal and in 2000 it’s more of a middle weight than its normal imposingly powerful character. For my taste, this is nearly ready and should only need another 2 to 5 years to arrive at its apogee.” - Allen Meadows, Burghound.com, 94/100 (Sep 2023)
Romanée-Conti Richebourg 2006
“Sweeter and more fragrant fruit than the Échezeaux and Grands-Échezeaux. Already charming and enchanting. But there is still a little tight pepperiness to it. Markedly fresh, delicate in the mid palate but then a cloaked power on the finish. Very long, silky but firm tannins, like reinforced silk.” - Julia Harding MW, JancisRobinson.com, 18.5/20 (Aug 2009)
“The 2006 Richebourg Grand Cru has a wonderful blackberry, brine and slightly peppery nose, the stem addition maybe a little more tangible than I would have expected. It coalesces in the glass, scents of black tea emerging with time. The palate displays an effortless balance, the fine tannins framing layers of black fruit with veins of blue. The sappiness comes through on the second half that is poised and satisfyingly long. Superb. Tasted at Hide restaurant in London.” - Neal Martin, Vinous, 95/100 (Jun 2018)
“The Domaine’s 2006 Richebourg leads with ripe, bright red fruits and smoked meat; fills the palate with sweet fruit concentrates and abundant, fine tannin, while tart notes of fruit skin, bitterness of cherry pit, and bittersweet vanilla lend counterpoint and invigoration; and finishes with striking suggestions of smoked and roasted meat as well as crushed stone and iodine. What starts out suggestive of sweetness and light, turns dark and brooding. If you don’t find that too depressing a metaphor to contemplate, and if you have patience (and, naturally, the requisite budget), this should be seriously worth revisiting from around 8-15 or more years of age.” - David Schildknecht, Wine Advocate, 93/100 (Dec 2009)
