About the Session

Italy dominates the auction, led by a considerable depth of Tuscan greats. Fontodi spans the full range of the estate from the benchmark Chianti Classico through multiple vintages of Flaccianello della Pieve, their iconic Sangiovese IGT, to the crown jewel Vigna del Sorbo Chianti Classico Gran Selezione. The jewel in the crown of Tuscan reds, Brunello di Montalcino is well represented with offerings from Il Poggione, Casanova di Neri, Silvio Nardi, and the rare Gaja Pieve Santa Restituta. A group of curated Italian Collections rounds out the Italian session, offering mixed selections ideal for those seeking range across multiple producers in a single lot.

About this Item

Vigna del Sorbo Chianti Classico Gran Selezione 2009
4 (1 x 4) 750ml
The Vigna del Sorbo is Fontodi's single-vineyard Chianti Classico Riserva, first produced in 1981 alongside Flaccianello as a complementary expression of the estate's finest terroir, principally Sangiovese grown in the Conca d'Oro above Panzano and aged for longer than the regular Chianti Classico. The 2009 is from a warm, generous vintage that produced voluptuous Chianti Classico of considerable power, the opulence of the year balanced by the estate's characteristic minerality and vibrancy. Antonio Galloni from Vinous gave it a rating of 95.

Provenance

The late David Brice was a respected wine connoisseur, collector and co-founder of Brice and Burnett – The Fine Wine Specialists (formerly Wine Cellar). His lifelong passion for wine from all corners of the world wine, and generosity, helped develop a culture of fine wine in South Africa and beyond. Always with value and authenticity in mind, the collection spans a wide range of styles from leading producers and diverse regions. The wines were professionally imported under refrigeration and carefully stored at Brice and Burnett (formerly Wine Cellar) thereafter. Many of the producers are not available in South Africa and provide an excellent buying opportunity.

Critics Ratings

“Super-ripe red cherries, plums, cloves, licorice and mint wrap around the palate as the 2009 Chianti Classico Riserva Vigna del Sorbo. A flashy, voluptuous wine, the 2009 reflects the overt, flashy style of the year in spades. The 2009 is a relatively rich, intense Sorbo, but all the elements are in place. Here, too, the tannin is quite a bit more finessed than in the Flaccianello. Even with all of its ripeness and volume, the 2009 maintains gorgeous minerality and vibrancy. A rich, resonant finish rounds things out in style.” - Antonio Galloni, Vinous, 95/100 (Feb 2014)
