About the Session

Italy dominates the auction, led by a considerable depth of Tuscan greats. Fontodi spans the full range of the estate from the benchmark Chianti Classico through multiple vintages of Flaccianello della Pieve, their iconic Sangiovese IGT, to the crown jewel Vigna del Sorbo Chianti Classico Gran Selezione. The jewel in the crown of Tuscan reds, Brunello di Montalcino is well represented with offerings from Il Poggione, Casanova di Neri, Silvio Nardi, and the rare Gaja Pieve Santa Restituta. A group of curated Italian Collections rounds out the Italian session, offering mixed selections ideal for those seeking range across multiple producers in a single lot.

About this Item

Flaccianello della Pieve 2007
1 (1 x 1) 750ml
Fontodi's Flaccianello della Pieve is one of Italy's most celebrated Super Tuscans, a 100% Sangiovese first produced in 1981 when a barely twenty-year-old Giovanni Manetti, working with oenologist Franco Bernabei, created something the Chianti Classico rules of the era could not contain; at the time DOCG law required white grapes in Chianti blends, so Flaccianello was bottled as an IGT, named after the ancient Pieve of San Leolino overlooking the estate's vineyards in Panzano. Sourced from the finest old-vine Sangiovese parcels of the Conca d'Oro and aged in French oak barriques, the 2007 is from a warm and generous Tuscan vintage that produced wines of exceptional richness and concentrated dark fruit character.

Provenance

The late David Brice was a respected wine connoisseur, collector and co-founder of Brice and Burnett – The Fine Wine Specialists (formerly Wine Cellar). His lifelong passion for wine from all corners of the world wine, and generosity, helped develop a culture of fine wine in South Africa and beyond. Always with value and authenticity in mind, the collection spans a wide range of styles from leading producers and diverse regions. The wines were professionally imported under refrigeration and carefully stored at Brice and Burnett (formerly Wine Cellar) thereafter. Many of the producers are not available in South Africa and provide an excellent buying opportunity.

Critics Ratings

'The 2007 Flaccianello della Pieve captures the essence of this great Tuscan vintage. It is a decidedly sexy, opulent wine bursting at the seams with rich red berries, mint and spices. The tannins are present but virtually undetectable under layer after layer of fruit. There is no question the 2007 is seamless, opulent and full-bodied. Readers who prefer more structured wines will gravitate to vintages such as 2001 and 2004. I find the 2007 utterly irresistible. It will also drink better earlier than some of the most classic vintages. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2027.' - Antonio Galloni, Wine Advocate, 95+/100 (Jun 2012)
