About the Session

Italy dominates the auction, led by a considerable depth of Tuscan greats. Fontodi spans the full range of the estate from the benchmark Chianti Classico through multiple vintages of Flaccianello della Pieve, their iconic Sangiovese IGT, to the crown jewel Vigna del Sorbo Chianti Classico Gran Selezione. The jewel in the crown of Tuscan reds, Brunello di Montalcino is well represented with offerings from Il Poggione, Casanova di Neri, Silvio Nardi, and the rare Gaja Pieve Santa Restituta. A group of curated Italian Collections rounds out the Italian session, offering mixed selections ideal for those seeking range across multiple producers in a single lot.

About this Item

Flaccianello della Pieve 2017
3 (1 x 3) 750ml
From the same Panzano estate, the 2017 Flaccianello della Pieve comes from a hot, challenging vintage that Fontodi's high-altitude viticulture in the Conca d'Oro transformed into a powerful, concentrated wine of exceptional structure and dark fruit intensity. Critics describe it as a standout of the dry vintage, combining the ripe opulence of 2017 with the characteristic zesty acidity and polished tannins that are Fontodi's modern signature. Walter Speller from JancisRobinson.com gave it 17.5 out of 20, and Monica Larner from Robert Parker's Wine Advocate gave it a rating of 96.

Provenance

The late David Brice was a respected wine connoisseur, collector and co-founder of Brice and Burnett – The Fine Wine Specialists (formerly Wine Cellar). His lifelong passion for wine from all corners of the world wine, and generosity, helped develop a culture of fine wine in South Africa and beyond. Always with value and authenticity in mind, the collection spans a wide range of styles from leading producers and diverse regions. The wines were professionally imported under refrigeration and carefully stored at Brice and Burnett (formerly Wine Cellar) thereafter. Many of the producers are not available in South Africa and provide an excellent buying opportunity.

Critics Ratings

“Impenetrable, deep ruby. Nose of cigar box with saline hints underpinned by concentrated dark cherry, that is still a little brooding. Succulent dark-cherry and raspberry fruit palate with fantastic gravelly tannins that make their presence felt on the finish. Still not at its peak.” - Walter Speller, JancisRobinson.com, 17.5/20 (Apr 2025)

“The Fontodi 2017 Flaccianello della Pieve is a standout wine of the dry vintage. This pure Sangiovese opens to a dark garnet color with more visible concentration and density compared to recent past editions. This is a beautiful wine with pliant tannins, dark fruit richness, balanced acidity and a fruit-forward 15% alcohol content. The wine is big and bold when weighed on the Flaccianello scale (and even more so when weighed on the Sangiovese scale) with dark cherry, plum, spice, violet, chalk and campfire ash. Despite that power and inner opulence, this wine adds that zesty Sangiovese character with fresh acidity and an energized approach. This Flaccianello is whole and complete with the natural firmness and structure to hold it steady during the aging process. A small part of amphorae-aged fruit is added to the blend.” - Monica Larner, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, 96/100 (Aug 2020)
